In The Virgin Diaries,
Cosmo post stories that different women had while loosing their virginity. Most
tend to follow certain trends while loosing their virginity. One woman
discusses it as being “Pre-discussed, pre-planned, almost staged.” The women’s
stories all seem to be planned out down to what exactly they’re wearing. One woman
explains she made sure to buy, “special lingerie.” Another says she planned out
a, “perfect song to commemorate the moment.” The women seem to be more
preoccupied with the details of how they’ll loose their virginity rather then
actually thinking about the idea of loosing it. The attention to finite details
seems to be a distraction from what is actually going to happen. Then, what
actually does happen most of the women described as, “awkward,” or seem
uncomfortable.
In a Rookie Mag cartoon, the girl describes being sexually
active as, “a pretty cool way to get boys to stay interested in you.” As well
as that, “How much I (she) enjoyed it didn’t really enter into the equation.
What did matter was how I (she) looked while doing it.” Loosing your virginity
seems to have become less of a romantic act rather then a well-scheduled event.
Women are becoming less interested in
whether or not they wish to stay pure and more interested in what
qualifications that need to be met so that they no longer have to be.
I believe the Rookie Mag cartoon has a point. Loosing one’s
virginity shouldn’t be done simply to get it over with or keep boys interested.
It should be about the action its self not the little details surrounding it.
